As an amateur cyclist, Matteo is probably on of the best and most successful riders in Europe in the last few years.
In 2017, Matteo was the highest Elite ranking domestic rider in Ireland by winning the Cycling Ireland A1 classification. In 2018, Matteo raced Pro with British Professional Team Holdsworth Pro Racing, partecipating also in China's biggest cycling event, the Tour Of Qinghai Lake. In November 2016, Matteo Cigala with his athlete Greg Swinand, broke the Irish Hour Record twice, First in Colorado and then in Aguascalientes, Mexico with a distance of 48.469km,
In 2019 and 2020 Matteo was the Sports Director and Head Of Athlete Performance at Ireland's only UCI professional cycling team EvoPro Racing.
In 2021, Matteo started the year sitting between the top 5 and top 10 of the E-Sport Zwift World Ranking. Once road races have resumed in the middle of June, Matteo has managed to win in the space of 4 months 11 races including some the biggest amateur races in Europe such as: Gran Fondo Il Lombardia Gran Fondo Tre Valli Varesine, Medio Fondo at Gran Fondo Strade Bianche and Medio Fondo at Gran Fondo Colnago.
Finally, in 2022, Matteo started its season by competing for the Italian National Team at the UCI eSports World Championship on the 26th of February, finishing in 25th position. 8 days after that, in Siena, he wins for the second time in a row the Medio Fondo at Gran Fondo Strade Bianche, making 8 consecutive wins in a row on the road.
After that, in June, during the Ras, he finished three time on the podium (3rd) out of 5 stages and 2nd overall in the points classification.
On July 17th, probably his most successful win of his amateur career: The Road Masters 19-34 European Championship in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Later in 2022, Matteo was also 6th at the first ever UCI Gravel World Championship.
Finally, 2023, was a special year for Matteo by taking two silvers are the UCI Gran Fondo & Gravel World Championship and by winning his first ever Italian title in Gravel.
